A fabulous antique French rustic rye coiled round basket sourced in the south of France from a local brocante and probably dating back to the late 1800s to early 1900s. This lovely basket was woven by hand from coiled rye grass which was then joined together with wicker. It is a testament to the skill of the weaver that it remains with us today and in such a fabulous condition for its age. These baskets were very versatile in their time and initially were used in boulangeries but later also for storing grains and pulses in the farmhouse larder and so they started to be made in many different shapes and sizes. I really like the shape of this one – it has a nice, rounded appearance thought never quite round as it is hand made. It sits perfectly flatly and has no wobble. A very sturdy strong basket which could be used for so many different things. Why not add some French antique primitive charm and history to your home with this lovely item!
Condition report:
It is in a fabulous antique condition. It has the very pleasant aroma of dried straw. A few of the downward weaves are absent or slightly loose but this has not affected the integrity of the basket which is still very useable for whatever purpose you require.
