This is an early oak and fruitwood double cupboard or dresser. It is a large and striking piece being heavily carved. The doors in particular are gorgeous, the carving is deep and the wood glows with age. The top has a lovely cornice with an overhang and carvings along and under it. The top cupboard has heavy carved doors and a single shelf inside. Below this are the slightly wider base cupboards, giving the top cupboards a slight set back. The base cupboard doors are again beautifully carved and open onto a single shelf inside. Above them are two half width drawers, again heavily carved. The base has a carved plinth and fat stubby bun feet.
The cupboard is a nice early piece, it is pegged and the wood has the right patina. The cupboard has its original back boards and is in nice order through out. It has slight signs of old worm which has been treated and is not active. The inner shelves are later replacements. The doors hang well and open and close as they should, as do the drawers. It comes with two heavy working keys. It is Continental, possibly Italian looking at the carving, but I’m not 100%. However it is a nicely balanced piece of furniture with loads of style and oodles of storage. Definitely a statement piece.
Condition report:
The cupboard splits into two pieces for moving – the top cupboard sits on top of the base and drawers. It is very heavy but the doors lift off the hinges easily (no screws as in English hinges) and if you take the drawers out it becomes manageable – I’m a lady of a certain age and my grandson and I got it on and off the van without having a heart attack, but with the doors on it is much heavier.
