An exceptional George III mahogany breakfront bookcase, attributed to Gillows and of impressive scale with pleasing, low waisted, proportions. The architectural triangular pediment having a bold cavetto shaped moulding centred with a carved foliate paterae, above the moulded and stepped cornice with the four protruding corners having carved flower heads below. The three pairs of astragal glazed doors flanked by reeded pilasters; the interior with adjustable shelves. The desireable low waisted breakfront base having a vertically veneered recessed moulding being a typical Gillows feature. The well figured mahogany panelled doors flanked by reeded pilasters, echoing the top. The central pair of doors revealing three mahogany drawers with cockbeaded edges and retaining their original gilt brass drop handles with an adjustable shelf below. The side cupboards having two drawers to either side, again with a shelf below. All of the doors having their original working locks with unusual pattern escucheons. Raised on a plinth base having the very unusual feature of a large pullout secret drawer to the centre section. The triangular pediment is removable giving the bookcase a more restrained look and reducing the height.
